As a Certified Holistic Nutritionist I get excited about foods that heal. I have been interested in disease reversal including cancer since I was 21. Little did I know that I would be diagnosed with it when I was older. I managed to fight it and survive my battle. Some of it was natural and some of it was old fashioned surgery. Natural cancer treatments can be quite complex and costly and can require enormous dedication and consistency. And so when it comes to disease reversal and a tragic disease such as Alzheimer’s disease, I am eager and frustrated in my attempts to spread the news about the amazing simplicity of coconut oil – this natural remedy (not a cure). Many of us know someone with this disease and we may even wonder if one day we might also become an Alzheimer’s statistic. There are over half a million Canadians who suffer from this disease, and one in eleven Canadians over the age of 65 have some sort of dementia.
Ketone Bodies from Coconut Oil Nourish “Diabetic” Brain Cells
I have not seen a disease or disorder so easily reversed as Alzheimer’s Disease. (Over 200 personal testimonials have been sent to Dr. Mary Newport, wife/M.D. of a recovering Alzheimer’s patient). Nothing seems to work faster in stopping the progression of many cases of Alzheimer’s like coconut oil and MCT oil. The healing action is in the body’s production of ketones, which is induced by the mitochondrial action when the medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil (and palm oil) pass through the intestinal wall to the liver. These ketones then pass into the brain from the blood and nourish brain cells (neurons) which, in cases of certain neurological disorders, no longer process glucose due to a brain insulin malfunction. New research shows that some neurological disorders are caused by a “diabetes of the brain”. (See de la Monte, Frontiers in BioScience – Elite Ed., 2012, Jan1;4:1582-1605.)
Research Supports the Ketone-Brain Connection – “Diabetes of the Brain”
Actually, we already know that Namenda and Aricept, which are still being prescribed for Alzheimer’s, do little to stop the progression of this disease. This is no secret. And yet, it is so hard to convince my local community to open their minds to this new coconut ketone connection. Researchers have known about the brain’s ability to use ketones since the 1960′s (Owen, Morgan, Kemp, Sullivan, Herrera, Cahill – Ketone Bodies, Potential Therapeutic Uses. Please see Int. Union of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, 2001, Apr;51(4):241-247). Researchers have also known about the ketone-Alzheimer’s link for more than 10 years (Cahill,Veech – Ketoacids? Good Medicine? See Trans American Clinical Climatological Asso. Journal 2003;114:149-161, Discussion 162-163). So why is it taking so long to spread the word?
Other Neurological Diseases Also Benefit From Ketones
The interesting and exciting news is that the benefits of coconut oil are even more far reaching!! Ketones from coconut oil can also help stop the progression of numerous other diseases that affect the nervous system including Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Autism, Bipolar Disorder, Macular Degeneration & Glaucoma, etc. Mary Newport has received letters discussing amazing success from those who have tried coconut oil for other neurological diseases and brain traumas including stroke and brain injury resulting in coma. Have you processed this stunning information yet?
My Pitch for Coconut Ketones on Rogers Television – Toronto
I had the good fortune to meet Dr. Newport at a Canadian Health Food Association trade show in the fall of 2011 and she gave me a signed copy of her book. As a Holistic Nutritionist who just loves to talk about healing and disease reversal, I was so amazed I just had to spread this good news as fast as I could. I contacted Rogers Television not long after I read Dr. Newport’s book. I was lucky enough to secure a segment in February on Finding Your Bliss with producer Carolyn Sohanewsky. The show went well, but I received no feedback from anyone via my website about this stunning information. How disappointing!
My First Public Lecture at the Aurora Library
I also spoke about her book at the Aurora Ontario Library just last month. The small crowd that came were great but we need a better way. I plan to continue talking about the coconut ketone-Alzheimer’s connection in the near future. Please stay tuned for more lectures about this good news. In the meantime please help me get the word out by mentioning this information and my blog and website to anyone you feel would benefit from this information.
If you are at all interested in Alzheimer’s disease, a caregiver, or know of someone who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease at any stage, please tell them to read Dr. Mary Newport’s book Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Was A Cure? , spend a few minutes on her website or contact me for more information.
I’d love your feedback on this subject. Feel free to leave a comment right here on the site and link back to your own blog if you have one through the commentluv feature here on my website.

Where can I get these coconut ketones? I would love to try them on my autistic son!!
Where can I get these coconut ketones? I would love to try them on my autistic son, and for myself!
Hi Laura,
When the liver processes medium chain triglycerides, several types of ketones are formed.
Autism is certainly one of the disorders that can benefit from ketones, in addition to many other mental disorders.
In many cases, brain cells or neurons which have experienced damage or trauma can benefit from a trial of ketone therapy.
If you would like to see what coconut ketones can do for you, you can try taking coconut oil straight from the container at in amount of about 1 tsp 4 times per day, increasing to 1-2 tbsp- 4 times per day.
You can get coconut oil for a good price at Costco…. or just about any health food store. Do you live in Canada or the U.S.?
