Damaging Effects of Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs)

A few years ago I became aware of the damaging effects of electromagnetic frequencies from cell phone technology.  There have been numerous studies done that show several diseases including cancer that increase in populations located close to cell phone towers. We have also learned more about cell phone radiation damage to the brain (e.g. brain tumours). But were you aware that there are other toxic EMF gadgets in your home that may be causing you health problems?

In 2010 I had an EMF audit of my home to help me determine what kind of EMF exposure I was experiencing there.   Kevin Byrne, owner of EMF Solutions spent several hours pointing out some hot spots and educating me on ways I could deal with these areas.  Lately I have done more reading on the topic of EMFs.  I have learned so much from several you tube videos offered by Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource Studies at Trent University.  Here is some of what I have learned:

Dirty electricity is caused by “leaking” energy from various electrical and electronic gadgets in your home like dimmer switches, CFL light bulbs (these are those compact fluorescent light bulbs that contain mercury and are spiral in shape), plasma TVs, treadmills, low voltage lighting, computers and gaming systems.  This leakage can be reduced with Graham-Stetzer filters that are plugged into several wall outlets throughout the home. These filters are available for purchase online for approx. $30. Note: Wind turbines, solar power panels and power lines are also concerns.

Radio Frequency fields are measured in microwatts per square centimetre.  If the current flowing through the wire is made to oscillate at a very rapid rate, the floating EMF will break free and be launched into space.  At the speed of light, the energy will radiate outward in a pulsating pattern, much like the waves in a pond.  These are the waves used for communication by Wi-Fi, cell phone, radio, satellite TV, baby monitors, smart meters, portable phones with DECT, and radar -(note:  DECT phones are horribly dangerous and can affect your heart rate by inducing tachycardia & arrhythmia.  They emit dangerous radio waves as long as they are plugged in).  If you live in a building that has several cellular radio towers placed on it, you may want to think about moving, as living directly under these towers can be a very dangerous place to live.  After Mr. Byrne’s audit, I turned off the WiFi feature on my router and bought several “wired routers”.  Wired routers use the home electrical wiring to carry the internet signal from the router to each computer.

ElectroHyperSensitivity (EHS) – Some of us are sensitive to EMFs and need to avoid them in order to preserve our health.  Some symptoms of this type of sensitivity can include: anxiety, heart disorders, vertigo, rashes, headaches, nausea, fatigue, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, tinnitus-type ear disorders, visual disturbances, depression, memory loss, etc.

What is the Canadian government doing to protect us from EMFs?  Health Canada’s “Safety Code 6” is completely inadequate and is inferior to many other countries.  In addition, Canada does not have any long term guidelines to deal with our increasing exposure to radio frequency radiation.

Some solutions:

  • Get rid of your DECT phone and use a 5.8GHz phone instead. It is much safer or go back to using a corded phone.
  • Minimize your use of cell phones. Texting is safer.
    • Use them in speaker mode or use an air tube head set.
    • Alternate the side of your head where you use your phone and don’t use it on planes, trains, etc.
    • Don’t use it in roaming mode – use it outdoors.
    • Discourage use by children, teenagers (yes, I said teenagers).
  • Avoid wireless routers, use “wired routers”.
    • If you will not get rid of your wireless router, plug it in only when in active use.
    • Don’t place router near or in the bedroom.

I have only touched the surface of this fascinating subject.  We all need to better understand how these powerful electrical fields affect our daily lives.  If you haven’t already heard Magda Havas speak about EMFs and health, you really need to.  We are lucky to have this amazing lady live right here in Canada. She has a popular presence on YouTube. Please check out some of her videos…this one, for example.

She has also co-authored a book entitled, Public Health SOS

She will at the Toronto Total Health Show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre this weekend, April 5th-7th, 2013.  She will speak on EMFs at 2pm on Saturday, and will be available for questions at booth no. 215.  I do hope you have the chance to catch her lecture.

Have you or your family experienced ill health as a result of EMFs? Share your experiences with me. I love getting feedback. And don’t forget to leave a link back to your own blog too via the commentluv feature here on the site.

In good health,

Cathy

This is an excellent article! I too have done a lot of research on the subject of EMFs and know we have good reason to be concerned. There are so many studies now that have correlated serious diseases to EMF exposure–I wish more people could be educated about this subject. I especially fear for our children.

      Dear Vidya,
So happy to get your response to my blog… yes there is much to be done about EMF’s. We can all do our part by mentioning it to our friends, signing petitions and warning our teenagers… who are so addicted to their cell phones, etc. I hope you have watched most of Magda Havas’ youtube videos.. I find them so informative!!!
cheers and I hope we keep in touch!!!
