“Eat Like an Ape!”
When it comes to our diet, we need to “eat like an ape”. Thanks to Victoria Boutenko’s curiosity about diet of the Chimpanzee, we have a better understanding of how leafy greens can help us improve wellness quickly, to a level we have never seen before. Victoria’s versions of Green Smoothies can help us do this. Here are 4 key reasons why we need to incorporate them in our daily diet:
- They are strong alkalizers. Since our Canadian diet tends to be more acid-forming, we need to alkalize and greens are super alkalizers.
- They are high in vitamins and minerals. If you are a gardener you may want to use the greens of your brocolli, beets, radishes, carrots, etc.! Throw them in your blender and make some green smoothies! They are loaded with cell building vitamins and minerals!
- They are low in calories. In this sedentary lifestyle of ours, many of us need to think of ways to eat nutrient dense foods that are low in calories.
- They are high in antioxidants. Lutein, zeaxanthin, betacarotene, etc. …greens are loaded with free radical-quenching antioxidants.

What Green Smoothies Can Do For IgE Allergies
I often meet people with seasonal (IgE) allergies, with typical symptoms including coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, etc. I try to tell them that a consistent healthy diet including a large amount of green smoothies for at least one month can help. Please read this allergy success story excerpted from The Book of Kale, by Sharon Hanna, Harbour Publ.
As a little guy, our son had terrible allergies to the point that he would go through a box of Kleenex a day. We took him to an Allergist who tested him and said he was allergic to a ton of things including cheese and dogs, which made him weep a little – he loved pizza and really wanted a puppy, so this was all terrible news……So his dad started experimenting with smoothie recipes loaded with every vegetable he could get his hands on, including and especially a lot of kale. It took a while and many experiments but he persevered and finally found a formula that our son and his sisters enjoyed… enough to happily drink about 6-8 oz every morning. After a month, all of our son’s allergies were completely gone.
