Although it’s commonly understood that the thyroid gland is the key gland that requires iodine, it appears through my readings, that the other cells in the body also need it to stay healthy. When iodine levels are low, the thyroid will take most of it, leaving very little for other organs and glands. This leaves very important organs such as the breasts, ovaries, adrenal glands and the uterus with inadequate amounts of this trace mineral which are necessary to keep disease away. I will discuss safe ways to ensure you get adequate amounts of iodine in your diet. There is merit to Dr. David Brownstein’s position about iodine. He has stated “after 17 years of practicing medicine, I can say that it is impossible to achieve your optimal health if you do not have adequate iodine levels.” from Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It. From my own experience with Lugol’s Solution, I must say, I do feel that the role of iodine & potassium iodide in the diet is not at all understood.
